The Scholarship Origin:

Elpidio Atienza is the tenth child out of twelve born to Evaristo and Dolores Atienza. He dropped out of school in the fourth grade to assist his family on the farm. After seven years, he decided that he would pursue his education instead of continuing to work on the farm. The family was extremely against his dreams, as they needed him on the farm and they had doubts that he would finish school. So, Elpidio ran away from home and he hoped that he would work for a Congressman that would pay for his education. After his elder brother, Briccio Atienza, found out what had happened, he persuaded the family to support Elpidio's education.

While he was attending College, Elpidio Atienza met Zenaida Calayan. After Zenaida received her B.S. in Commerce, they got married and soon after they had their first child. As Elpidio was attending school, both the Atienza and the Calayan family supported Elpidio’s education, as well as providing housing and food for his family. He went on to become the first in his family to graduate from College, with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Many of the board members are extremely grateful for the enormous support from both the Atienza and Calayan Family and the support of the community, as their lives have positively been impacted.
